App store listings written from what the stores show today

It reads your listing, where you show in store search in each market and the apps above you – then writes three options per store and market, measured against the store's own limits and checked against your brand's rules.

Overview

What is App Store Optimization?

App Store Optimization rewrites an app's listing on the App Store and Google Play from what the stores show today, in any market the stores cover – the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, the United States and many more. Before it writes, it reads the current listing, where the app shows in that country's store search for the terms you want to be found for, the listings of the apps above it, and what recent reviews say, grouped into themes and quoted from the reviews themselves. Searches are per language. People in Germany search in German, so each language gets its own terms, and each listing is read and written with its own language's searches. It then writes three options for each store and market. Every field is measured in code the way the store counts it – the App Store name and subtitle at 30 characters, the keyword field at 100 bytes, the Google Play short description at 80 characters – and checked against the stores' rules: words repeated across fields, the singular and plural of one word, competitors' names, and Google Play's policy on app names. Each option shows which of your terms it carries and in which field. Each option is also checked against your brand's own rules and against the advisories for your industry where they apply. A brand rule an option breaks is shown on the option as something to fix, and an advisory as advice. The option stays, and you decide. Neither store publishes search volume, so a demand figure appears only with its source named beside it: Apple Ads search popularity when you connect Apple Ads, the search terms from your own Play Console reports when you connect them, an estimate of monthly store searches for the United States in English, and for other markets Google web searches in that country and language – labelled as interest on the web, not store searches. Nothing is predicted – no ranks, no downloads. The whole read downloads as a PDF, slides or a Word document to share with your team or a client: the listing today against the three options, where the app shows, demand with its sources, the apps around it, what reviewers say, the screenshot plan, the tests to run, the brand rules and advisories found, and what could not be read. It never changes a listing on its own. A person copies an option into App Store Connect or the Play Console, or, with the store connected, sends it from the page after confirming. Chat and your AI team write the same listings and never send them.

Key benefits

Why marketers choose App Store Optimization.

Reads before it writes

Your current listing, where you show for your terms in each market's store search and the apps above you are read first, so every option starts from what a person searching that store sees today.

Measured against each store's limits

Every field is counted in code the way the store counts it: characters for names and descriptions, bytes for the App Store keyword field. An option that breaks a limit is never shown.

The stores' rules, checked

Keyword field hygiene – commas without spaces, no word already in the name or subtitle, no singular and plural of one word, no competitors' names – and Google Play's policy on app names are checked on every option.

Your brand's rules on every option

Each option is checked against your brand's own rules and the advisories for your industry. A broken rule shows on the option as something to fix, an advisory as advice – you decide what goes to the store.

No invented search volume

Neither store publishes search volume. A demand figure appears only with its source named beside it – Apple Ads or your Play Console reports when connected, an estimate for the United States, Google web searches elsewhere – and otherwise the page says there is none.

Every market, in its own language

The App Store and Google Play in one run, up to four listings across stores, countries and languages. Each language gets its own searches, and each listing is written in its own language.

Reviews and screenshots in the same read

What recent reviews say, grouped into themes and quoted from the reviews themselves, and a screenshot plan of real app screens – plus a size check of your screenshots against each store's specification.

A report to share

Download the whole read as a PDF, slides or a Word document – the listing today against the options, positions, demand with its sources, review themes and the tests to run.

How it works

How App Store Optimization works

01

Pick the app and the markets

Paste an App Store link or ID or a Google Play package, or choose an app saved for the brand. Choose the markets – the United Kingdom, Germany or any other the stores cover – and up to 20 terms per language you want to be found for.

02

See the stores today

The page shows the current listing measured against the limits, where the app shows for your terms in each market and the apps above it, before anything is written.

03

Write three options

For each store and market, three options are written from what was read. Every field shows its length against the limit, the checks it passes or fails, any brand rule or advisory it touches, and which of your terms it carries.

04

Share it and put it live

Download the read as a PDF, slides or a Word document to share. Copy the option you pick into App Store Connect or the Play Console, or send it from the page with the store connected. A person always sends it, and the App Store version is never submitted for review from here.

05

Compare after it goes live

Mark it live, then read the positions again for the same terms – the listing stays in Your listings. With App Store Connect or the Play Console reports connected, the store's own numbers sit beside them: 28 days either side for the App Store, the month before and after for Google Play.

Use cases

Real-world applications.

A listing nobody has touched since launch

Scenario

The name and subtitle were written at launch, and nobody knows which searches the app shows up for today.

Solution

Read where the app shows for the terms that matter and which apps sit above it, then pick one of three measured options that carries those terms in the fields the store searches.

Going live in a new market

Scenario

The app is launching in Germany, and the German listing is a translation of the English one.

Solution

Add Germany in German as a market, with the searches people type in German. The options are written in German from what the German store shows for those searches, and measured against the same limits.

A listing under strict advertising rules

Scenario

What the listing may promise and who it may speak to is set by the brand's own rules and its industry's standards, and every draft is checked by hand.

Solution

Every option is checked against the brand's rules, with the industry's advisories shown beside it. A breach is marked on the option before anything reaches the store, and a person still decides what is sent.

Reviews the listing does not answer

Scenario

Reviewers write about a feature they love or one they miss, and the listing says nothing about it.

Solution

What recent reviews say is grouped into themes and quoted from the reviews themselves, with a listing idea for each, so the option that answers them is written from what reviewers actually said.

A keyword field that spends its bytes twice

Scenario

The App Store keyword field repeats words already in the name, mixes singular and plural, and puts spaces after its commas.

Solution

Connect App Store Connect to read the current keyword field (it is private). Every option's keyword field is counted in bytes and checked for repeats, plural pairs, spaces and competitors' names, so its 100 bytes carry new words.

A review for a client or the board

Scenario

You need to show where the app stands in the store and what to change, in a document people can read without signing in.

Solution

Download the read as a PDF, slides or a Word document, with every figure labelled with its source and everything that could not be read named.

Best practices

Before you publish a listing

Choose the words a person would type into the store, not your tagline – the stores match words

Give each language its own searches – people search for the idea in their own words, not a translation of yours

Put each word in one field: a word in the App Store name or subtitle does not need to be in the keyword field too

Separate App Store keywords with commas and no spaces – a space spends a byte

Leave competitors' names out of every field

Read Google web searches as interest in the topic, not as searches in the store

Show the real app in your screenshots – both stores require it

Test one change at a time, and read the result in the store's own experiments

Re-read positions for the same terms and markets after the change is live, and compare like with like
